WWC / Rubicon On Hold

This'll be the last Tuesday that I have to be in at work at the place I've been earning my paycheck for the last four years. I'm kind of excited about that. It's starting to look like my demands will be met, but nothing is final on that yet...

Did I say it was Tuesday?

Yes! That means we're about to have us some fun with the Weekly Words Challenge. The WWC is brought to us by the hacky sack packin' zombie saviour Tink of Pickled Beef. And she gave us the words WOOD and METAL to play with this week.

Before I present my pictures of this week, I will give you some rather bad (sad?) news. Now, don't be too upset about this, but I've decided to put my Rubicon Heart story on hold for a little bit. I do intend to get back to it, but for the last week my private life (I try to maintain that too) has been a little hectic. So that's been the reason why you didn't get a new chapter this week. Then, for some reason, since The One left the country, my need to write the thing and get it out of my system has diminished. I can't really explain it... but I've just not felt right about writing it this past week.

If I don't feel right doing it, I don't think it'd be fair to put it out there for your reading pleasure either.

I hope to get back on it soon, though. Just letting you know that it may be a while before you get to read on...

Now, I hope you are still in the mood for some pictures!

So there you have it. My WWC pictures for this week. Next week we will be playing with the words STONE and GLASS. She's giving us a break lately with some easier words... but, as I found this week - it wasn't all that much easier.

There were a couple of pictures, that I thought would rock this week, that I meant to go out and take this morning before I went to work. But, weather had the audacity to ruin it for me. It was pouring rain all morning, and I just couldn't get out there to take the pictures I wanted - that's why you got those late night pics from a playground near my home. In a state of panic, I walked over there as I got home from work, and hoped the flash would be enough for a couple of acceptable shots.

Anyway!

In case you missed it, I posted the new Picture Fiction Challenge for next month. Scroll on down to see that if you missed it yesterday.

Rubicon Heart: Chapter Three

CHAPTER THREE: “The Evelyn Era”

Hell’s Café.

I always thought the name was funny. It was the name of the coffee shop we always hung out at during the three years I lived in this town. I still don’t know why it was called that… there’s no Swedish word that spells Hell.

Anyway… We were all gathered at Hell’s Café around noon the day after I had come so close to losing my virginity. My friends from my home town had arrived too, Rob, Johnny, Andrew, Tommy and my cousin Andy. We were going to throw one massive party tonight.

“We need more booze”, Stephen says. Stephen was one of those guys that when I first saw him I thought we would never be friends. Me and Pete both thought so when we came to this town and realized we would be in the same class as this guy. He was no hard rockin’ dude, and looked like a wimp as far as I was concerned. At that time I still believed that Metal dudes were the only guys worthy of my friendship. Stephen, however, quickly proved that wrong and became one of my best friends ever – even though he did sport that ridiculous hair cut.

My hard rockin’ girlfriend, Evelyn, sat next to me. Close to me. Her hand rested on my leg, and she was brushing up against me. I had a hard-on tucked away in my pants that begged for relief.

“Yeah, we do. I don’t have much to drink at all”, she says.

“All I’ve got is some moonshine”, Rob informs. “And it tastes like shit”

It was always me people would turn to when they needed something from the liquor store. I looked older than most, and I probably had more guts than most when it came to that sort of thing. Pete speaks up.

“R.E.H. You can do it, right?”

“Oh, please do!”, Evelyn chimes in and looks at me with puppy eyes.

I didn’t have much to drink myself, because I was more interested in what me and Evelyn would be doing later tonight than I was of the party itself. I wanted some alcohol, to loosen up a little. I wasn’t looking to be totally plastered the way I always was. But… I figured a bottle of whiskey wouldn’t hurt any.

“Sure. I’ll give it a shot”, I said and grabbed a napkin to write down what everyone wanted. We all agreed that we buy a couple of extra bottles ‘just in case’, and I ended up with quite an impressive shopping list. I knew, from experience that one or two bottles was usually easy to buy – whereas a list like this one would most likely warrant the dreaded question: “You got ID?”

I walked down the stairs of Hell’s Café and wandered onto the street. It was only a five minute walk to the nearest liquor store, and when I arrived I walked inside confidently. During the walk there I had memorized the list, knowing I didn’t want to stand there with a crumpled up napkin in my hand reading it like a book. I stepped up to the counter – booze was only sold over the counter. You couldn’t just grab a shopping cart and fill it up yourself.

“I need three bottles of Famous Grouse whiskey, four bottles of Bacardi, a bottle of…”, and I kept rambling what I needed. The woman behind the counter was looking less than amused, but intently listened to me as I read out loud from my memory. My enthusiasm started to wear down as I neared the end of the list. I knew that look she had – it was the look of a woman who was humoring me. When I was done – there wasn’t a trace of a smile to be found on her face.

“You got ID?”

I had done this before. I had my routine.

“Sure”, and I started rummaging through my wallet. “Aw, shoot! I must’ve left it in the car. I’m parked just down the street. Do you really need me to go fetch it?”

“Please do”, she says and immediately pushes the button that brings up a new number on the board. I guess it beats hearing a loud and clear ‘NEXT!’, as she looked away from me.

I go back to Hell’s Café. Just as my head appears in the staircase leading up to our table I hear the groans and sighs of disappointment. They all knew I had failed, because they didn’t hear the clink-clank sound of bottles in a plastic bag as I came up the stairs.

“Shit dude”, Stephen says. “Go to the other place, up on Main Street. Sure they’ll let you buy!”

“That place is always really busy on Saturdays”, I tell him. I didn’t really want to go there. I had a feeling today was not one of those days that I would successfully buy any booze.

Everyone started begging me to do it. I tried telling them someone else could go, but they insisted that I do it. Finally I agreed. I walked to the other place, came inside and it was packed. I waited, and I waited for my turn. There was this one elderly man I recognized, because he had rejected my purchase once before. I was hoping I wouldn’t end up being served by him.

BLING! My number appears on the board. I check which counter flashes the digits I’m holding in my hand. Of course – it’s the cranky old man. I didn’t even come to a full stop in front of him. I certainly never had the opportunity to draw breath and begin my order before he speaks to me in a stern voice.

“If you still got your ID in the car, don’t bother trying kid”.

Yeah, he recognized me alright. I walk out in shame. That was majorly embarrassing.

I return to the coffee shop. We go through the same process again, and finally I have agreed to try the third and last liquor store. It was a little further away, and required a short bus ride. The other’s chipped in for the fair, as I refused to pay for it – seeing as I was doing them all a favor.

An hour later, I was greeted by loud cheers and applause as I walked up those stairs again, with a loud and clear clink-clank sound accompanying me. When I saw them all sitting there drinking their coffee and clapping their hands, I raised the plastic bags full of various kinds of liquor toward the ceiling.

“PAAARTY TIIIIIME!!!!!”

“YEAH!!!” All of them screamed in unison. Other guests at Hell’s Café were not quite as amused.

And, party we did. I quickly finished my bottle of whiskey. Always drank it straight out of the bottle back in those days. I was a tough ass son-of-a-bitch, and that’s how you drank your whiskey, damn it! Of course, drinking like that had its draw-backs. One always became flat out of his mind drunk. Somewhere along the lines I lost track of where Evelyn was, and I was okay with that for the time being. I would take care of that virginity issue later – right now I wanted to party hardy ‘til the cows came home!

I talked to my friends from back home. We drank like mad, music was loud and one or two had already passed out and lay unconscious on the floor or on a couch. One or two had taken refuge in the bushes out back and were puking their heads off. Everything was just the way it was supposed to be.

And, now I was horny. I could barely stand up straight, but now I was horny. Because so many people were at the party, we hosted the thing in three different student apartments. I hadn’t seen Evelyn for a while, that I could remember, so I figured she must be over at Stephen’s place.

I stumble over there, still drinking yet another Heineken. I had about ten of them that were originally going to be all that I was going to drink. Instead, I had already finished a bottle of whiskey, and was probably on my eighth or so Heineken.

I stumble upon Andrew and Johnny as I walk into Stephen’s apartment. The door is of course wide open – anyone is welcome.

“Andrew! Johnny! You crazy ass mother-fuckers! Where you been all night?” I just realized I hadn’t seen much of them. Nor had I seen much of my good old friend Rob.

“We’re partying, dude!”, Johnny shouts as he grabs hold of my neck and head butts me. It was one of those things that he and I always did when we were drunk.

“Where’s Rob?”, I ask once I can see straight and the stars in front of my eyes begin to fade. Andrew and Johnny both walk away from me – quickly. Stephen shows up.

“Stephen, my man! Hey! Seen Evelyn ‘round here. I’m looking for her”.

Stephen doesn’t really look like he’s in a party mood right now. He looks like something is bothering him quite a bit.

“Hey, man. What’s up? It’s party time dude. What the hell is wrong with you?”

“Evelyn…”, he starts.

“Yeah Evelyn, dude. Where’s she at?”

“Aw, fuck man. You don’t wanna hear this shit”. He finishes off the beer he’s got in his hand and puts the empty bottle down on the kitchen counter. He walks over to the fridge, which is about four steps away.

“What the fuck do I not wanna hear?”

“Come here, dude”, and he motions for me to follow him into the kitchen – where less people will see us. “Evelyn took off”.

“What? Whaddya mean? She went back home?”

“No… fuck!”, he drinks about half of his new beer. “Evelyn and Rob…”

“What about Evelyn and Rob? What the hell have they got to do with one another?”

I had known Rob since I was a kid. There was no way he would take a girl from me. If he had I was going to fucking kill him. That was how I felt right then and there.

“I’m fuckin’ sorry, dude. But, they took off. Got in a car and I think they went back to your Home Town.”

I smashed my bottle of beer into the sink. Beer and shards of glass sprayed everywhere.

“I’m going after those two fuckers!”, and I had every intention to.

It took a lot of my friends to hold me back. I was screaming and kicking. I wanted to go after them and I was going to kill Rob for stealing my girl. Somehow, the others managed to get me to drink enough booze that I ended up passing out in Stephen’s shower stall, where I had done a fair share of puking too. I have vague memories of people holding me up straight and showering me, fully clothed, to clean me up.

The next day, hung over like never before, I took a bus and went back to my home town. I was still pissed off beyond belief, and I’m kind of lucky that I never did find Rob anywhere. He had heard the news that I was coming after him, and so both he and Evelyn decided to hide from me. Turns out it was Pete who made the call, and I thanked him for that. Things could’ve turned really ugly if I’d gotten a hold of Rob that day.

On Monday, after I came home from school, the phone started ringing. I pick it up. I hear sobbing on the other end of the line.

“I’m so sorry”, Evelyn says.

I didn’t know what to do. I liked this girl a lot, and I really didn’t want to lose her despite everything. I was silent, as I didn’t know what to say.

“We didn’t do anything. Honest to God.”

“People saw you two kissing”, I say as-a-matter-of-factly.

“You know what I mean… we didn’t do… that.”

Somehow, that was a relief to me. Somehow, I believed her.

We continued to talk for quite a while, and she told me how she thought I was too drunk that night, and that she felt I pushed her away because I was hanging out with my buddies all the time. She explained that she became really drunk herself, and that it didn’t seem like such an evil thing to go hook up with Rob. She said she wasn’t so sure I wanted to be with her. I thought it was all bullshit, and that it was indeed a big deal. But, I wanted to give her another chance, so I was going to forgive her. Rob, maybe not, but her I would forgive.

There’s no make up sex on the phone. But there is make up promise-of-sex on the phone. We agreed she would come back over the next weekend, and it would be all about me and her - and that big party back in my home town of course. There was a big party every weekend back in those days.

I thought it would be nice to see her in my old home town. Rob, of course, was not going to be at the party we were going to. He was still afraid of me, and probably rightfully so at that time.

When Evelyn came over, she was beautiful as ever. Things between us had been really good over the week as we spoke on the phone, and she was loving and kind to me when we met again. We didn’t speak at all of what had happened the previous weekend. That was the past, and we were now looking to the future.

The not-so-distant future was that same night. At the party – when history repeated itself… sort of.

It was an outdoor party, and we were out by the river on a field of grass surrounded by bushes. It was a common place for parties in my old home town. When I wandered around, looking for Evelyn who once again had disappeared on me, I found her making out in the bushes with Stephen.

Outraged, I walk up to them.

“What the fuck is going on here?”

Stephen doesn’t even seem to react. He just rolls off her and looks off into nowhere. Obviously he’s completely wasted. Evelyn, however, reacts in shock.

“It’s not what you think!”, she says.

“Do you think I’m fucking blind or something?”

And, then Stephen has the nerve to start projectile vomiting. He misses Evelyn by inches, but drenches himself in that vile stuff coming out of his mouth.

“He’s sick”, Evelyn quickly states. “I was just trying to make him feel better and he was all over me. I didn’t mean to kiss him”.

I knew Stephen well enough to tell that he would not do this to me. And, if indeed what she said was true – it was certainly not something Stephen would have intended to do. Strangely enough I wasn’t angry with him at all. Both of us ended up taking care of him, and we brought him back to my mother’s place where we were able to lay him down on a mattress on the floor, and where he passed out.

With him on the floor next to us, and my mother in the next room – there was no sex on the agenda that night either.

The next day, Evelyn returned to her home town, and me, Stephen and Pete all went back to college town. That same night, as I was watching TV there is a knock on my door. Pete was out somewhere that night, I don’t remember where. As I open the door, I see Stephen, who has finally managed to regain some color in his face after last night’s zombiefication.

I see there’s something on his mind, and I let him in. We sit down, and I figured he wanted to talk to me about Evelyn. I was right.

“Listen dude. I’m sorry about last night”

“Yeah, I don’t know. Was it you or was it her?” I knew if there was anyone who would answer me truthfully as to who it was that initiated the make-out between the two of them, Stephen was the kind of guy that would fess up to it and take the consequences.

“I don’t know, really. Maybe both of us were guilty of that”. He looks at me, almost expecting me to punch him in the face. I wanted to know the whole story, so I let it slide for the time being. Besides – I knew he wasn’t interested in her. Like I said – Stephen was not a hard rockin’ dude, and he wasn’t into metal, crazy hair chicks. I still couldn’t quite figure out why he had been kissing her in the first place, because she was so not his type of girl.

“I was really fucking drunk. I don’t know if I came onto her, or if she came onto me, but you know how it goes. When you’re drunk you’ll kiss any pair of lips that come close enough.”

“Yeah, but Evelyn’s my girl.”

“I know. You can hate me all you want, but you know I wouldn’t do that to you.” I knew that was the truth. Then he said the thing that I should’ve listened to, and listened carefully to. “You’re not going to see her any more, are you?”

We had said goodbye that morning, and she had kissed me. She had once again told me how sorry she was, but that she liked me a lot – she really did.

“I think I will”, I told him. “Things are going to get better between us. I just know it.”

It was that rubicon heart of mine speaking. I had my heart set on this girl, and I had decided that this was the one I was going to lose that damn virginity with… and besides – she had once promised me a threesome with her sexy friend Leah. I was not going to pass up that opportunity.

We didn’t see each other for a few weeks after that. We spoke on the phone a lot, and things were wonderful when we did. I started to really believe that next time we got together things would work out just fine. The bad stuff was behind us.

There were times I was wondering, though, if she was faithful to me over there. I knew she was experienced, and that she had quite a few fuck buddies back home. My rubicon heart promised me that she was as faithful as I was to her.

Over time, I had also been assured, from very reliable sources, that Evelyn and Rob had in fact not had sex that one night. I even spoke to Rob once on the phone, as he assured me of that as well, and said he was so sorry about what he had done, and that there was no excuse, but he hoped we could be friends again. I had told him I would need some time. Right now, if I saw him, I was liable to kick his ass still.

The next time I saw Evelyn, we were back in my old home town again. It was only a two hour drive from college, so I went back there quite often on the weekends, to party with my old childhood friends.

That was the last time I saw Evelyn. That was the time when she crossed the line, and after which there was no turning back. There was no longer any possible way that I would be able to trust her again after that night.

The party was wild, as usual. And, as was equally common during those parties, I lost her somewhere along the line of time.

Someone lost their virginity that night. That someone was not me. It was my childhood friend Andrew who put his love inside of Evelyn. To this day still, Andrew and I are not on good terms. It happened on the lawn behind the house where Andrew lived. I had walked by there, and they had been right in the middle of it – noticed me, and kept silent hiding in the darkness. I never knew how close I was until his brother, Johnny, told me the story.

“He’s really sorry you know. You should forgive him. You know how desperate he was to lose his virginity, and you know how stupid he becomes when he’s drunk”, Johnny assured me. It was Johnny who was the closer friend of the two, and I never had a problem with him.

“There’s no fucking way I’m going to forgive him”, I told Johnny. Johnny wasn’t going to stop being my friend, even if I was a sworn enemy to his brother. But, he would’ve of course preferred it if the two of us could sort things out.

When Evelyn called, begging for my forgiveness, crying her heart out on the phone, I told her to go fuck herself, because that was all she was good at anyway.

I gave up on women. I gave up believing in them, anyway. I was back to random make-out at parties… I was not going to give my heart to anyone ever again. It’s not like I was in love with Evelyn – not the way I felt about that girl Priscilla from back home. With Evelyn it had become more like an obsession, which focused mainly on the fact that I was going to get laid, and that she would be so freakin’ good at it. And I was going to have a threesome with her and her friend. That was all out the window now.

Still, I had decided to give her my heart. I had given her everything that I had, and I had not once cheated on her, even when we were apart for all those weeks. I didn’t really look at other girls, because I had committed to her. I wasted a few months of my life believing in her. Never again!

It wasn’t all good. I found myself enjoying some good fondling and kissing with girls at parties, but I was back where I was before. I didn’t dare ask a girl to be mine. I was too scared of what would happen if I did. It wasn’t only rejection that worried me any longer… what if they turned out to be two-timing bitches like Evelyn? I didn’t want to go through all of that again.

I focused on my dreams of becoming an actor. When a local television station back in my home town wanted to make a low-budget amateur series, me, Pete and Stephen all went over there on the weekends and landed parts in the series. It was being produced by the film club me and Pete had been part of for many years, so there was no auditioning required. We just signed up.

At the first meeting over there, we discussed what we wanted to be in the series. All of us actors got to choose a part that we wanted to play. No script was written yet, so we all had the chance to create our own characters. Something that we thought would be fun to play. The premise was a bunch of kids graduating, and the series was to follow their lives after school as they entered adulthood.

Immediately I thought of my sister, who had passed away of an overdose Heroin about four years earlier.

“I’d want to play a troubled kid, who’s hooked on drugs. You know. A nice guy and all, but drugs are ruining his life”. I wanted to do this to honor my sister. It was important to me.

“Sounds like a very good idea”, the producer and director Eddie says. I’d known him for many years, and always thought of him as a really cool adult.

“I could be the girlfriend”, I hear a female voice speak up. I look around the room, and I’m surprised to see a very attractive blond with her hand raised. “You know. Who tries to help him, but it’s really hard, but I stay with him because I love him”. She looks at me. Winks at me. I am stunned. Is this a new brand of flirting I’m being subjected to here?

“Julie”, Eddie says. “That sounds great. What do you think R.E.H.?”

“Sure… yeah, why not?”, I look over to her and she smiles at me.

Julie. Wow. She was kind of hot too. We spoke briefly after the meeting, and said that we’ll see each other next week when we were due for another meeting, and when a draft script would be presented. Actually, they never really used a script. It was more like a bullet list, of some scenes they were going to shoot, and us actors mostly improvised the scenes as it were.

When back at school we skipped class one day. Well, we skipped class quite often to go for a cup of coffee instead. Too often, it would prove. The acting school sucked the big one, and even acting class itself was rotten, and our teacher was a drunk. It was me, Pete, Stephen, Sue and Emelie who did most of the class cutting. We were the ones who always drank ten or so cups of coffee on any given day. Emelie was the gorgeous blonde who I would’ve fallen in love with if it wasn’t for the fact that she had a boyfriend she’d been together with since she was fourteen. I always secretly wished that relationship would end, so I could swoop in there like a knight in shining armor.

This day we decided not to have our coffee at Hell’s Café, but at a place in the mall instead. Our drunken teacher was often seen at Hell’s Café, cutting class herself, smuggling a flask in there to spice up her coffee. When it was acting class we were avoiding, it was best to drink our coffee at another place, so she wouldn’t run into us there.

“So, you think this girl… Julie, right?... is sweet on you?”, Emelie asks.

“I don’t know. I was kind of surprised at that whole ‘I’ll be his girlfriend’ thing”.

“You better believe it she’s sweet on him”, Pete butts in. “She was drooling like a rabid dog in there”.

“Yeah, right”, I say.

“No! I saw her, dude. She was looking at you the whole time.”, he changes to a high pitched teasing voice. “R.E.H.’s got a girlfriend, R.E.H.’s got a girlfriend”.

Everyone’s laughing.

“Yeah, that’s really funny guys. Doesn’t mean she wants me you know”.

I wasn’t really all that interested. She was good looking and all, and I figured if the opportunity arose, I would be glad to give up my man-cherry to her. But, she was not girlfriend material as far as I was concerned. Then, again. No one was girlfriend material anymore. Unless…

I opened my pack of Marlboro’s and found the pack empty. Stephen quickly offers me one from his pack, but I declined. I was only on my fifth cup of coffee or so. We had at least an hour or two before we were going to leave this place. I didn’t want to bum cigarettes the whole time. I got up from my chair.

“I’m just goin’ over to the tobacco store to get me a pack of smokes”.

The tobacco store was just down the hall in the little mall we were at. I had bought many a pack of cigarettes there. This time something occurred that probably changed the course of my entire life. It was one of those deciding moments in fate.

I walked in to the tiny store. I had my eyes fixed on the cigarette case – on the Marlboro’s in particular.

“Pack of Marlboro’s, please”, I say.

And then the world stopped turning. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The blonde girl behind the counter turned around and went after the pack of cigarettes I had asked for, and I guess it was a good thing she turned her face away from me. My jaw unhinged, went dropping to the floor, and my eyes bulged right out of their sockets. I stopped breathing.

It couldn’t be?

She gets the pack of cigarettes and turns back to face me. She was the most beautiful, sexy, hot and cute girl on the face of the earth. Her wonderfully wavy blonde hair falling over her shoulders like angel hair. Her petite and simply perfect body swaying as she walks back to the counter and puts down the pack of Marlboro’s on top of it. Her baby blues fix on mine, and a smile worth dying for spreads on her face.

I swallow.

“Priscilla?”

“Yes.”, she says. That smile still cutting through my heart. I’m done for. My rubicon heart is beating like crazy in my chest. What was she doing here? Why was she behind the counter at the tobacco store I had purchased my smokes at so often? She lived in another town, and I didn’t think I was going to see this beautiful girl ever again. The girl I had secretly been in love with since I was thirteen.

She’s got a name-tag on. She might think I picked up her name from there. I did confirm that what could not possibly be really was, by checking that name-tag.

“I don’t know if you remember me. We went to school together.” I was so nervous my voice failed me, and my hands were shaking.

“R.E.H… Of course I remember you!”

Right then and there, I knew. No one else would ever compare to Priscilla. She was the one and only girl I could ever truly fall in love with.

Rubicon Heart: Chapter Two

CHAPTER TWO: “The Pen-Pal Girl”

Shacking up in a small student apartment in a new city at the age of 17 with my best friend meant we had to agree on a set of rules. These rules mainly covered routines for when we met up with some hot chicks.

“First one to bring home a chick gets the bedroom”, Pete exclaims seriously as we have the discussion.

“Yeah… The other one will sleep on the couch out here”.

We had a very small bedroom with two single beds – one on each side of the room, divided by a small open area and a nightstand beside each of the two beds. The other was a small living room, and there was a kitchen nook so small one could barely turn around in there. We also had our own bathroom and a shower stall so close to the toilet seat it would be no problem to take a shower while taking a dump at the same time. Not that one would want to do that.

“But… what if we both come home with a girl at the same time?” I’m starting to see problems with that one simple rule.

“We’ll flip a coin”

“Deal!” And so the rules were agreed. Not once, during our stay in that small apartment did we need to flip a coin for that particular reason. Not once did either one of us have to sleep on that couch… not for any other reason than ones own choice though.

In fact, I snuggled up with a girl on that couch while Pete got the bedroom all for himself once. I had invited her over, and told my room mate to lock himself into the bedroom, because I was going to watch The Exorcist with the girl. The Exorcist was my choice movie with the girls. It would always scare them and they’d come closer and closer, holding my hand and leaning their heads against my chest looking for comfort. A good horror movie was the best way to get that closeness without seeming too forward.

Still, during that first year in acting school I didn’t have a single girl whom to call my “girlfriend”. I was still a virgin too, and I still had all those problems to show affection for an attractive girl. I never thought of myself as good looking enough to warrant the attraction of a beautiful girl. It was probably because I always fell for the really pretty ones – the girls that everyone wanted, and I wasn’t the type of guy that every girl would desire.

Because of my obsession with Priscilla during the High School years, I was not impressed with a chick if they didn’t look absolutely stunning. I had no interest in hooking up with a girl just because she was nice, or sweet. We could be friends… but I didn’t want anything more from them.

Priscilla was whom every girl would be compared to, and while there was no one who I thought was quite as attractive as I found her, there were plenty of girls who came pretty close. I fell for one of the girls in my acting class, and we became very good friends indeed. Problem was – she had a boyfriend whom she’d been together with for four years. Since she was thirteen she’d been dating the same guy, and the two of them were inseparable. There was another girl (another blond) who went to our school who also worked sporadically as a model. I wanted her badly.

Continuously, I found myself obsessing over the girls that I wanted. The girls that I was attracted to, and so I never really noticed or cared about the girls who wanted me. It was I who were supposed to do the choosing – or it might just as well not happen at all.

During many of those parties that we had – and believe me, they were a plenty – I would often hook up with any old chick and we’d make out and all that, but I would never pursue that the following day. There was that one time when I ended up kissing the spoken-for-blond in my class during a particularly wild party, but I couldn’t follow up on that because I knew she was so in love with her man.

Toward the end of the first year at school we were sent out to get some hands-on experience in the theatrical field, and I got an opportunity to work as a trainee at a film studio in an even bigger city – about a five hour drive from where we lived.

That’s when my love life took a drastic turn of events.

For a couple of years I had kept in touch with a few girls through letters. It was back in High School that I once decided to look for pen-pals through the ads in a popular teen magazine. While my mouth has a hard time expressing my feelings, my pen has never had a problem with that. I got a ton of responses from that ad, and the girls I chose to continue to write to went through a pretty simple selection process. Did they include a picture of themselves in the letter? If not, they went in the trash. Were they absolutely stunning on that picture? If not… in the trash they went. I had kept about 7 of them – from various places and cities in the country. I had never met any one of them in person.

Over the two years or so, I was still only writing to two of the original girls, and one of them happened to live in the city I was going to. This girl was really attractive on that one picture I had of her. Her name was Evelyn. We had a lot in common from the letters we wrote to each other. She was a Hard Rockin’ chick, and had long brown hair, full luscious lips and wore a studded jeans jacket on that photo. She was a little tough looking, yet stunningly beautiful.

I sat down and wrote Evelyn a letter. I told her I was going to the city she lived in, and that I needed a place to stay for a week. The trainee period only lasted for a week, as we were due back in school after that.

I thought she wouldn’t want that, and that I would have to look for another place to stay. But, I was wrong. The letter she sent back to me was full of anticipation and excitement.

'It’s going to be awesome. I’ve wanted to meet you for so long. My friends too. I’ve been showing your picture around. We call you the Indian. All of my friends have a crush on you.'

That’s pretty much what the letter said. I was shocked, and now I couldn’t wait to get there. All those girls were attracted to me? Suh-weet!

But, I was also nervous. Oh, they’re going to be so disappointed to see the real me. I’m not nearly as good looking as I was on that – now two year old – picture.

As the time came to meet Evelyn in real life for the first time I was damn near petrified. I got off the train at the station with my suitcase full of clothes that would last me the whole week, and there she was with a big smile on her face, greeting me. She gave me a big hug, and I hugged her back. We began talking as if we’d know each other for years… which I guess, in a sense, we had. She was even more beautiful in real life than she was in that picture.

When we came in to her apartment, her mother enthusiastically greeted me as well, and welcomed me to their home with a nice home cooked meal. There was another woman joining us for dinner, and I figured she was some friend of Evelyn’s mother.

I stayed in Evelyn’s room. She’d laid a mattress out on the floor for me. And, that first night one thing got me curious. Her mother’s friend was still there. A sleep over? Adults don’t do that. I began to enquire about the situation.

“Who’s the other woman?” I ask.

“She lives here”, Evelyn says.

“Oh…”

Back in the 80’s the concept of homosexuality was frowned upon, and people sure didn’t speak openly about it. I guess I ignored the thought completely and made myself believe they were just roomies – just like me and Pete back home.

“My mom’s a lesbian”, she said as if it was the most natural thing in the world. I was very surprised, but the way Evelyn spoke of it as the most natural thing in the world made it sound perfectly normal. I was still a little curious and intrigued by the whole thing. I was sleeping in an apartment with a couple of lesbians and a hot looking girl who actually seemed to like me. Life was an adventure.

We spent the next few days hanging out downtown a lot – visiting record stores and listening to awesome music. She knew of this place that sold a lot of rare stuff, and I picked up a few records I had been searching high and low for – among them a rare original press of Alice Cooper’s debut album “Pretties in Pink”. The fact that the music on that one sucked didn’t matter much. I was determined to add every single Alice Cooper album to my collection.

I did notice that she would stop every now and then and say something which I was supposed to take as flirtatious, but I was afraid that going there would complicate things – and dammit, I had a few more days that I needed the place to stay. Being thrown out would not be a good thing. So we stayed platonic. Just friends.

When only two days remained before I was going home, we were awake late as usual. We were talking, and I had started to realize that I was wasting a perfect opportunity to land me a pretty girlfriend here. My mind was on overload, and I was contemplating every possible scenario as to what would happen if I told her I had fallen for her – that I wanted her so much I would be the happiest guy on earth if she shared those feelings with me.

I knew I had to say something. Right now! Not much time left for us to be together before I would head back home. She noticed me being quiet as we spoke, and she noticed my longing glances at her. She also noticed that I would quickly look away from her when our eyes met. When our eyes met, the electricity in the air seemed overwhelming, and I had a hard time coping with that.

“What are you thinking?” she asks, and judging from the smile on her face I instantly knew that she already knew the answer to that question.

My face felt hot from the anticipation and the embarrassment that I couldn’t put it to words. My blood pressure went up and my heart pounded heavily in my chest. Even I knew that tonight was the night – she did want to be my girlfriend. The first girl I would ever actually call that – not just some random make-out honey on a drunken night. She wanted to be mine, and she wanted to tell all of her friends that I was her boyfriend.

But, I still had no idea how to express any of this in words. Not by means of my mouth anyway. I was trembling, that’s how nervous I was.

I grabbed my notebook I always carried with me to write down ideas for novels in.

“I can’t say it out loud”, I told her with a barely audible voice.

I wrote in the book. ‘I think you are beautiful. I keep thinking I should kiss you, but I’m just no good at saying these things. What I really want to ask you is if you want to be my girlfriend. I think that would be sweet.'

Then, I handed her the notebook, and buried my head between my knees. I couldn’t stand the thought of looking at her reaction when she read that. What if she looked horrified and uncomfortable about it? What if she started laughing, telling me that ‘Oh, boy are you out of your mind? Why would I want to be with you? I’m way too hot to waste my time with an ugly ass guy like you. Why don’t you go play in your own league, buddy. This sweetie pie is too good for you.’

It took a little while, and then I felt her hand on my leg. I looked up at her – absolutely terrified. She was smiling, and looked me straight in the eyes.

“Why couldn’t you say that?”

“I… uhm… I didn’t… don’t think… you… uhm… me. Ah… never mind. Forget it.”

She reached out and touched my face with her hands. Her smile never faltered, and her eyes kept searching for my fleeting gaze.

“Yes”, she said.

Again, our eyes met.

“Yes, what?”

“Yes. I want to be your girlfriend. I can’t believe it took you this long to ask.”

“You’re just so beautiful.”

Then she leaned forward and kissed me. I was in heaven. I had a girlfriend! A real girlfriend!

The last two days I stayed at her place we were inseparable. One might just as well sew our lips together, because they barely ever parted. We didn’t have sex. Neither one of us was comfortable because her mother’s room was right next to hers and her mom and her female lover would have heard exactly what we were doing. We talked about it though. She was no virgin. She had a lot of experience in the field at only 16 – she was a year younger than I. During one of those conversations, I had to ask the pressing question. That question that needed to be asked, only because her mother was a lesbian.

“Have you ever had sex with another girl?”

“Yeah... me and Leah have been fooling around a little.”

Leah was another blond hottie whom we had hung out with quite often during my stay there. She was also a real hard rocking girl – and Evelyn’s best friend.

“She is really hot for you too, you know. Maybe I could ask her for a threesome some time. She would do it. Would you like that?”

Are you fucking kidding me, would I like that? Hell yeah, I would like that!

Instead, I answer “That would be fun. But, I want it to be just the two of us that first time”

“Me too”, and she laid down her head on my chest. We fell asleep like that, and the next day I had to go back home.

Going back to school was a joy in itself. I quickly announced the news that I had a girlfriend to everyone I met, and proudly showed her picture around – so that they could see it wasn’t just any old girl. It was a truly beautiful girl at that. I was proud!

We spoke on the phone every day, and quickly agreed that she come visit me. She couldn’t come that first weekend, but the weekend after that she was coming over. It was going to be so sweet to get together again.

As that weekend arrived, I spread some mattresses on the living room floor and told my room mate Pete that he could have the bedroom to himself. The beds in there were too small, and space wouldn’t allow the two beds to be put together, as they would block the door if one tried. I wanted to sleep next to her, and not in separate beds. We were going to have sex, dammit. I was going to lose my virginity this weekend.

Before I went to the train station to pick her up, me and Pete were talking. He was going to visit a girl he’d been seeing, and so me and Evelyn would have the place to ourselves at first – it was no secret to my best buddy what I was aiming to do. He had already lost his virginity – we kept each other informed in that department.

When we came home after I had picked her up, my friend Pete was gone. Good. We had the place to ourselves. We started unpacking some of her clothes, talked a little and that nervous sensation started building up in me again. I so needed to get her on those mattresses right now. I sat down on them and told her to come over. We began kissing, and soon I was on top of her. I slid my hand under her blouse and fondled her tits. My already erect penis was pressing against my pants – begging to be released. She pressed her body against me – she could feel the bulge down there. We took it slow, she was teasing me – gently stroking that bulge with her hand before she pressed her face hard against mine and thrust her tongue deeper inside my mouth. She grabbed my ass and pulled me ever closer to her.

I unbuttoned her blouse and started sucking her nipples. I was so horny I could almost explode – the towering monster in my pants ready to erupt. She started whispering in my ear, asking if I was ready for her. Asking me if I wanted to come inside of her. If I wanted my manhood inside of a girl for the first time in my life.

I wanted it. I wanted it so bad it hurt.

Then the familiar sound of footsteps on the staircase leading up to our apartment was heard. It was loud and clear.

Evelyn suddenly throws me off of her. There is panic in her eyes, and she buttons her blouse with urgency. Her eyes wide open.

“That’s him, isn’t it?”

I have no idea what she’s talking about. Not at first. My only thought is that the bulge in my pants had just been cheated.

“Who?”

“Your room mate!”

And then there’s a bang on the door, quickly followed by the sound of keys sliding into the keyhole. The only thing sliding into any hole should’ve been my cock in her pussy! What the hell was he doing home already? He had fucking promised to stay away until the evening!

After introducing the two of them quickly “Pete… Evelyn. Evelyn… Pete”, I took Pete aside.

“What the hell are you doing here?”

“Sorry. I just had to get home. Girlfriend broke up with me.”

“You know I’m sorry to hear that, but damn Pete! We were getting busy here!”

“I’ll lock myself into the bedroom. I won’t bother you”

“What the fuck. You don’t understand. It’s not happening when you’re here! You weren’t supposed to come home until later tonight!”

We continued to argue about the fact for a while. Pete was obviously heart-broken over the break up, and I was horny as hell – there were no rules set up for a situation like this, and we couldn’t find a solution that would work for the both of us. I was going to have to wait until the next day to lose my virginity – and that was a certainty. The day after we were going to host a big party, and friends from back home (old High School friends) were going to come visit us on that Saturday. We were throwing the party of the century.

So, tomorrow was going to be the best day of my life. Some serious partying, and losing my virginity, all in one night. The three of us ended up watching a couple of horror movies together, and talked about how much fun we were going to have at the party tomorrow.

At night, as we lay in our make-shift bed making out, it almost happened anyway. But, I put a stop to it, because I was too nervous. I thought, with some whiskey in my system, however, I wouldn’t care one bit if my friend Pete was in the room next to us… hell – I wouldn’t care if he were standing right there beside us watching and cheering us on - “Penetrate that girl! Whooohooo! He scooores!”

That was the last night I fell asleep holding Evelyn close to me, and feeling comfortable about it. That was the last night that I truly believed she was in love with me.

The next night, and that party, changed everything.

Rubicon Heart: Chapter One

CHAPTER ONE: “Discovering Love”

That giant square block of architecture, that was the High School building, had never looked the same as it did that one morning. We had all seen it, of course. Many times during our young lives. We had seen the crowds of boys and girls walking back and forth on the yard, and standing there, laughing, goofing around, being loud and obnoxious as they stood at the bus stop waiting to go home… or wherever it was they were headed after a day of school finally came to an end.

That morning the structure was intimidating and exciting at the same time. Inviting us to come inside and begin a new life - A life of adulthood.

It was the five of us. Me, my cousin Andy, Bobby, Rob and Ronald. We stood at the top of the small paved walking path that went up the steep rise between a single house on the right and a grove of trees on the left. A medium trafficked street drew a line between us and the four story, yellow and white building that was to be our school for the next few years. Once we crossed that street and walked through the double sided glass doors we would enter a new era of our lives.

“You guys ready?”, I ask.

It was always the five of us. It had always been the five of us, meeting up at a mailbox which was strangely located at a three-way intersection. We all lived close by, and always met up at that mailbox to walk to school together. For years we’d been walking together to our old school, but this was the first time we continued past the old school and continued down the road, up that narrow path and to the High School which would offer so many adventures for the next three years of our lives.

“It’s going to be awesome!”, Bobby says.

“It’s a little scary”, my cousin Andy proclaims.

“I hope we can make it through the day without being ‘initiated’”, I add to that.

Being ‘initiated’ was something we’d heard about. When the younglings, us new-comers each year, first came to the High School there was traditionally a two week span in which the older kids did awful things to us 7th graders.

Not only could we expect to be pressed up against the wall and threatened to be beaten up, but we could end up head first down the toilet bowl as they flushed it. There was a chance someone would sneak into the locker room during gym class and throw our clothes in the shower, or even take them outside and spread them around on the school yard. We could be victims of classic noogies and wedgies… and basically – we knew we would have to stick together to survive the first couple of weeks.

This was the intimidating part of standing there outside this massive building. The exciting part was meeting new people.

The High School housed more than 3 times as many classes, and we would meet new friends and find new fun things to do. And, many of those new people would be girls. At thirteen, we were beginning to look at girls in a whole new light. No longer did we curl our lips in disgust at the thought of kissing a member of the female species and complain about “girlie germs”. We were now curious of how it felt to hug them – to brush up against that small bulge behind their shirts. That part of the girls which they had recently started to develop, and which was known to us as titties (giggle). We were curious about giving them a peck on the softness of their cheek… or if really brave – a peck on the lips!

Yeah, I had kissed a couple of girls on the lips in my days before – but that was more of a childish kiss, and would always be followed by a quick swiping of the mouth and that lip-curling of disgust. What had changed now was that one wanted to kiss a girl, and even go as far as licking the taste of their lips off one’s own lips afterward. Actually enjoying it.

Together the five of us crossed the street. Grouped tightly together to ward of any possible threat as we entered the school halls and felt a rush of emotions going through our whole bodies.

Enter adulthood! Adolescence in fact, but we didn’t think of it that way. Once you belonged to this school – you were officially an adult the way we saw it.

And enter a new phase of life I did as I set foot inside of that school. I had never been one of the popular kids, and I was secretly hoping that all that would change at the new school. I would no longer be the one everyone would pick on and make fun of, and that was one of the reasons I wasn’t too scared of the ‘initiation’ threat. We would all be equally picked on by the older kids in school. We would all be victims of those stunts, and now those who had been picking on me would find out how it feels being on the receiving end of all that.

I actually managed to make it through the first two weeks without any major embarrassments. A couple of times I would be pushed up against the wall while some kids threatened to kick my ass – once I had to give up a soda I’d bought down at the cafeteria to save my precious little ass from being whopped. Apart from that I faired pretty well. I witnessed some of my friends getting the head-flushing treatment. One had to wear soaked wet clothes the rest of the day after gym class when he found his clothes bundled up in the showers.

I had also laid eyes on the prettiest girl I’d ever seen. She was blond, with blue eyes and a smile that spread happiness a mile away. She would walk the halls of the school with a group of her friends, and they were always laughing and joking and they were all very pretty. The blond one was the prettiest of them all. A year or two later, when Madonna released the “Like A Virgin” hit, she would adopt the Madonna look and pull it off, looking even hotter than Madonna ever did.

I didn’t know her name. Not for a while. I most certainly never spoke to her during the first year at the new school. She was way out of my league… and whenever I suggested to any of my friends that I should talk to her, they would laugh it off.

“Yeah right, Dude. She would laugh right in your face. She and her cute little friends. You know you don’t belong with those chicks, man. They play a whole different kind of ball.”

Yeah, they did. They were the girls who hung out with the older boys in school. The athletic ones… the boys who were always surrounded by a horde of pretty girls. Pretty girls who were smiling and laughing with them, while they seemed laid back and comfortable, and didn’t really care about any one of them. They only cared about them as a group of pretty girls they could brag about to their friends.

I was one of those boys who felt far from laid back and comfortable when I spoke to a pretty girl. I was one of those who got tongue tied and nervous. Smooth talk was not my game… I played in a whole different league, and in a completely different kind of ball-park.

I found out her name when the school year book arrived. I quickly located her class page and saw her picture there. My God was she pretty, and that smile of hers almost came out of the inch-wide black and white photo, to warm my heart and make it sing.

Priscilla. Even her name was the most beautiful thing I’d heard.

It wasn’t until the second year of attending High School that I first spoke to her. I had found that I was still the kid who was being picked on and ridiculed. During that second year of High School, something inside of me changed.

I didn’t want to be that kid any more. And, while I couldn’t be like one of those guys the women would flock around, I could at least be one who stood up for himself, and didn’t let any one bring him down. The type of kid who believed in what he was doing and what he represented.

One of the reasons I found the strength to be that kid was on account of me and my friend Pete. We were introduced to a local movie making club. The fantastic invention of VHS had made it easy to make home movies, and although the movie making club had been around for years shooting short films on 8mm and 16mm – the invention of VHS made things so much easier and cheaper.

We made a movie together. My friend wrote it, and the chairman of the club helped him shoot the thing. Pete invited me to star in the movie, and we played out some of our crazy kid stunts while shooting.

Me and Pete had been friends since I first arrived here from the States. His mother ran a day-care program from her own apartment, and I was one of the kids who went there after school until my mother could come pick me up and take me home. Me and Pete were always great friends.

He and I would do the craziest things, and one of our favorites was to buy acetone and light things of fire. Most preferably – ourselves. We would soak up the sleeve of our shirts or the legs of our pants with water and then pour acetone all over it. Then we put a match to it, and ran around screaming in imagined pain and fear.

I was starting to allow myself to be crazy. I had always enjoyed being a little bit nuts, but it was in the 8th grade that I really allowed myself to be crazy when people could see me. In that first film, I burned off every single little hair on my arms, as we wanted a scene where I suddenly burst into flames. I poured acetone directly on my arms and lit it. The screams in that scene were one hundred percent real. No need to bring out my acting skills.

Thank God our preferred liquid for setting things on fire were acetone. Acetone burns out quickly. Had we used lighter fluid or gasoline, I would’ve certainly been hospitalized after that particular stunt. My skin probably burnt right off of my arms.

My desire for acting became one of my tools for entertaining people at school. Making them laugh with me, instead of at me. I chose to become the class clown – and frankly, it did me a world of good.

The first time I ever spoke to Priscilla was when I pulled one of my ridiculous and comical acting stunts to entertain my class mates. I had bought a bag of potato chips at the cafeteria, and we were sitting at one of the tables in the hall. A couple of tables down, Priscilla and her followers of pretty girls sat laughing and joking as usual. There were many boys who would stop for a quick chat, some of whom they would speak back to and giggle that pretty girly laugh. Others would be sent on their way, because they were not good enough to be seen talking to them. That was the only time the girls would stop laughing. That was their way of showing them their company was not appreciated. Be on your way, we only speak to the pretty boys!

On any given day… I would have been one of those boys who were sent on his way. That’s why I had never walked up to talk to her. I didn’t have the balls.

This day I felt cocky, crazy and mischievous.

“Check this out”, I said to the group of people I was sitting with. I stood up and tucked the bag of potato chips under my jeans jacket, which was covered with sewn on patches of nearly every heavy metal band that existed. I put myself into acting mode, and confidently walked toward the group of girls. I stopped directly in front of Priscilla, and put on the face of a pervert about to flash himself to her. I looked to the left. I looked to the right, as if to make sure no one was around.

“Pssst”, I hissed at her.

The girls fell silent. They were about ready to give me the cold treatment. I was in acting mode, and couldn’t care less. I was sent here to entertain – and entertain I would.

“Hey, listen”, I whisper just audible enough for the girls to hear. I continue to look around me as if worried I was going to be caught by the police. “I got something for ya”.

They didn’t say anything. Priscilla didn’t say anything. She was looking directly at me though, and that was the first time she’d ever done that. I was pleased to just being looked at. I’m pretty sure she was lost for words – meaning I was in charge of the situation.

“Ya want it?”

She still doesn’t speak. A couple of the other girls started to mumble and shift uncomfortably in their seats. They were a little embarrassed by the situation. What if some cool guy would see them talking to me… that would not do.

“I… I d-“, she starts speaking, but doesn’t really appear to know what to say. I quickly interrupt, and I flash my jeans jacket open, thrusting the bag of chips right at her.

“Quick! Grab one!”, I say with imaginary panic in my voice.

She suddenly starts laughing, probably surprised at the whole thing. And, then she stuck her hand down the bag and pulled out a handful of potato chips. Mission accomplished! The prettiest girl in school just accepted my offer of potato chips – I was king of the moment.

Then, as quickly as that, I hid the bag of chips under my jeans jacket again, and quickly walked away. The friends at my table were laughing, and looking at me with unbelieving eyes. Some were shaking their heads, letting me know just how crazy I was.

“Told’ya! The girl likes me!”, I said as I sat down.

A couple of days later, as I crossed paths with Priscilla in the hallways and none of her girlfriends were along. She smiled at me.

“Got any more candy for me?”, she said. I was stunned, my tongue went numb. Acting mode was no where to be found.

“Uh… no”, and I continued to walk toward the classroom.

The 8th grade, and being fourteen was also when alcohol was introduced to our lives. Parties were a plenty, and I was one of those who would often host one at my mother’s apartment. Whenever she was out of town for the weekend – a party was thrown at my place. We were almost evicted once, after there was puke everywhere and some idiot had thought it would be a good idea to break the front door window downstairs. My mother was not pleased at all.

During one of those parties – Priscilla showed up at the door. I was so pleased to have her in my home, but she brought her boyfriend of the week with her. I don’t think I even spoke to her all night. A couple of other times we would end up at the same party somewhere else, and I would speak to her occasionally. Short conversations that would mostly end with me being laughed at by her and her posse of girlfriends. It was clear that I was not welcome among the cool people.

I was, perhaps, good for a laugh or two because I was that goofy kid. But, I was not one they wanted to be associated with on a friendly or (dear God No!) a romantic level.

On one of those many parties I had my very first kiss. By that I mean the tongue-thrusting kind. Not just a peck on the lips followed by nervous giggles. I’m speaking of deep tongue in mouth, lathering saliva, and faces smooched together for minutes on end. Drunken sloppy kissing, the way only inexperienced teenagers know how to French kiss.

It was a girl that was three years older than me. I was about to go home, because I was shitfaced drunk, when this girl is standing right by the door at the party.

“Going home?”, she asks.

“Yeah”, I mumble, about ready to exit through the door and walk home in the cold and the snow outside.

“Too bad”, she says. “I kinda like you”.

I stop dead in my tracks. Girls don’t come up to me and say that kind of thing every day. And this one was older than me! How cool was that! She was like seventeen or eighteen – God knows what experience she has!

“Huh? What?”

“I could kiss you”, she says. I had my jacket on, and I was ready to leave. She walked up to me and put her arms around me. She looked deep into my eyes, and then she leaned forward. Every nerve in my body went berserk, as I parted my lips and her tongue thrust inward, into my mouth. The warmth, the softness and the taste of her saliva (which tasted very much like alcohol, wouldn’t you guess) took me to heaven in an instant. The snake in my trousers came alive and tried really hard to break free of its imprisonment in my briefs – bulging against the fly, making me almost worried it would break open and Mr. Penis would pop out and say “hello” to the onlookers.

We stood there in the hallway making out for at least fifteen minutes, before she suddenly walked away from me. I found out later that her boyfriend was at the party as well, so I guess I was lucky he never came out of the kitchen and found us making out. He too was an older kid… one that I actually befriended a few years later. He and this girl were still together then. I don’t think he knows to this day that his sweetheart was the first girl I ever kissed - The first girl whose tongue was entangled with mine.

The walk home that night through the slush and the cold was a fantastic experience. My mind was racing, and my heart was pounding. I had kissed a girl! Wait ‘til everybody hears about this! And an older girl at that! A girl who really knew how to kiss a guy!

When I came home I opened a new notebook I'd bought, and for the first time in my life I started writing a diary. The first entry was a three page rant about the experience of being kissed by a girl.

I never had a real girlfriend during my high school years. I had a few crushes, and I had quite a number of experiences making out with girls while drunk at a party. I wasn’t the type of guy who had the balls to ask a girl to be my girlfriend – it just seemed like such a big step to take.

Priscilla was the one and only girl I truly wanted though. She was the most beautiful thing in the world, but I knew she would never be mine. Everyone said so… I had no chance at all of landing someone as popular and good looking as her.

When high school was over, and I packed my belongings at the age of seventeen to move out of town, I had never really spoke to her more than briefly. I had made her laugh a couple of times.

I had never, ever, dared telling her I was attracted to her.

Me and my friend Pete left town. We got a small student apartment together in a new city. A bigger city. We were going to be actors and had signed up for an acting school.

My mother was not pleased that I left for the big city and got a place of my own at the tender age of seventeen. But, she was always a very supportive mom, and knew that this is what I really wanted. It was only a couple of hours drive to get there, so it wasn’t like I moved to the other side of the country. I would still be able to come home on the weekends every now and then, and she could come visit me any time to make sure I was doing ok.

Going to acting school was our choice of college. We were going to start a new life, and it was going to be so exciting.

I didn’t think I would ever see the pretty face of Priscilla ever again. I had to face reality. Me and her would never be one.

But, even then, I knew I would never find a girl as pretty as her ever again.

Priscilla, no doubt, was the prettiest girl on the face of the earth.

Irritable Ramblings

Rubicon Heart Update:
Did you ever feel like you were out jogging one beautiful morning, and everything was just perfect. Each step feeling light, and the scenery around you breathtakingly beautiful... and then suddenly you trip and fall face first into Poison Ivy?

Well... that's pretty much what's happened to me on the "Rubicon Heart" story. I'm trying really hard to finish that next installment for you all, and I promise to have it out there soon. I'm planning on posting Chapter One on Monday. Let's hope I can find the strength and energy to complete it by then.

The One Update:
I was convincing myself that things were better there for a while. That we were getting along just fine, and that maybe - somehow - I would be able to get close to her once again. The way things used to be before the big L-O-V-E issue came between us.

I think now I may have been fooling myself on that one. I'm starting to realize that I am the one who's doing everything for her, and not getting a damn thing in return. I'm starting to feel like she doesn't really give a rats ass about me, my needs or my feelings. I am only there for her whenever she needs me to be... and if I were to ask something of her - well, she'll probably have other things that require her attention.

Because I've started to think of our friendship like this, I've been very irritable the last few days. This is probably one of the reasons I'm having a hard time with the Rubicon Heart story, because it was aimed to address the whole thing between me and The One, which I am now beginning to realize is not a story which will either have a happy ending, nor an open ending which would allow for a sequel. I'm beginning to worry that me and The One is nothing more than a closed chapter.

Maybe I could come to terms with the fact that she doesn't love me like I love her, but I don't know if I can keep seeing her when I don't feel like she cares about me as a friend either. I need her to love me one way or the other - romantically or simply as a friend.

It took me fifteen years to truly fall in love again... how long before I'm ready to open myself to those feelings again?

Fuck My Job:
Irritable doesn't even begin to explain how I feel at work these days. I came very close to just walking out the door once again today. I was aimlessly wandering the warehouse all alone, looking at the mess around me and I thought:

What if I'd just walk out the door right now? What if I just went home, packed my belongings and bought a one-way ticket to Hollywood? I'm not a young dude anymore - this is what I should have done 15 years ago... but as you will find out in Rubicon Heart, other things were happening in my life back then. I simply cannot do this crap for much longer, or I'll end up in a padded cell at the Institution for the Savagely Insane.

Insomnia:
When you add the above negatives together, the end result is a severe case of insomnia. I've not slept well for at least two weeks now - so that part of my New Year's Resolutions is going straight to the frying pan.

It's even worse than I've experienced for a very long time. It's keeping me awake until 3AM at night, and I'm currently operating on 3 hours worth of sleep on average. That's no way to keep those creative brain cells in good condition.

Poker Annoyance:
Another result of all of this is that I'm now having a minor dispute with one of my best friends. One of my most dependable poker buddies, who will always show up when a game of Texas Hold'Em is on the table.

He sent me a text at work today, as we'd planned to play tonight - but we were a couple bodies short. So, he asks if I'd recruited any more players. I couldn't answer immediately, because I was working, right? So a couple of hours later he texts me again, letting me know that he is giving up on the idea of poker tonight because he's tired of waiting 'til the last minute every Saturday. I sent the following text back to him:

'I CANNOT FUCKING REPLY INSTANTLY SINCE I'M AT FUCKING WORK, YOU KNOW. NO ONE WANTS TO PLAY ANYWAY - SO FUCK IT!'

I've not heard a word from him since... no poker tonight - as you might've guessed.

Advice from the Subconscious:
I need to get some sleep and have some serious fun. Cheer up! Get your shit together! What good comes from sulking anyway?

Tomorrow is "Funday Sunday":
That concludes my depressive ramblings for today... tomorrow I'll be funny again - because I've scheduled Sunday's to be funny... Hardy-har!

I will answer...

No need to go to such extremes... No need to break out the whip and give me forty lashes. No need to cut me with that dull, rusty knife and rub salt into the gaping wound. You don't have to burn me with a blowtorch, cut off my fingers with a cigar cutter or ask 'Vlad the Assassin' to punch me in the face 'til I look like I was introduced to a meat grinder. There's no use for electrical shock treatment, or depriving me of food and water for days on end...

...I will answer your questions!

Please, don't hurt me. I will tell you anything you want to know.

It seems to be quite a popular thing around the blogging world, and I've yet to take the opportunity to ask you - The Reader - to submit questions for me to answer. So, I thought I'd give this one a go.

At first, I'd planned to bring you the next installment - the First Chapter - of my "Rubicon Heart" story today... but I've sort of run into a little bit of a pickle with that. I haven't yet decided how to proceed, because I've come to realize that things that have happened sort of overlap each other. Now, I'm uncertain as to how I should put the pieces together to make a coherent and linear story. Since I want each separate "event" to be it's own chapter, while certain events would stretch over a long period of time.

I'll have it ready for you soon enough though. I'm itching to write the thing.

So, what better to do than be a little personal today?

Hammer out the questions... I will do my best to answer them honestly and truthfully. Ask me anything - from the sexual to the boring - like "What kind of food do you like?", "What's your favorite show on TV?".

The only questions I will refuse to answer are those who will and should be answered in my "Rubicon Heart" story.

I will post the answers to these questions on Wednesday, so keep'em coming until then. I'll try to answer all of them in one post - but, if you guys bombard me with too many questions, I might be forced into breaking it up into two Q&A posts.

Tomorrow is Weekly Words Challenge day. The words are SOFT and SQUARE - just to remind you!

PS. Like the picture? I have a feeling I will regret that one ;)

Reflecting on "Rubicon Heart"

I had meant to post this yesterday, but I've been working really hard the last few days, and trying to go to the gym after work. This has resulted in me leaving for work at 8 AM and returning home after 10PM the last 3 days. Add to that reading up on some of your blogs out there, posting the WWC on Tuesday... well, I've simply not had the time to sit down and write this thing.

Well... the good thing is that I've really had some time to reflect on the whole thing.

Like I mentioned in the WWC post, after I had clicked the "PUBLISH POST" button to fast forward what I had written into the blogosphere, where you all could read it, I got a little frightened. I think that is just one of many words that could describe how I felt. Frightened, nervous, panicked, terrified, worried and... and Fucking Great!

I didn't quite know how you people would react to it, so sitting there - waiting for comments to start appearing was a very anxious time. Then, I saw you people giving me positive feedback and kind words... and I started to think it really was the right decision.

Again... Thank You all very much for commenting on that one (and all other posts too of course).

I think I need to explain once more. Although I did say so in that Introduction, I think it does require a small reminder.

The "Rubicon Heart" story is not going to be about that part of my life. It will focus on my love life only, and the reason I started it off like that was because I believe many of the decisions I have made in my relationships are direct results of this life I've had.

So... while the opening installment was very dark and depressive - not all of "Rubicon Heart" is going to be like that. Some parts will even be quite comical (believe me, I've had some strange girlfriends in my days).

Another thing that I thought I might mention is that the introduction was very personal, and written with me being a very real and present person - like a letter. This is because it was meant very much as an introduction to any novel. The actual "Rubicon Heart" story, will be written a little more with a fictional prose to it - a story-telling mode. This is because I believe I should actually try to step outside of myself and have a look at what happened from... sort of... an out-of-body-experience perspective (isn't that one of the strangest explanations you ever heard?)

What do you people think of that? (Not that it matters much - I'll write it as I want to anyway, but still nice to know)

Finally, I want to not only thank you for your concern and support. I found that many of you commented on my writing style, and that the read was compelling and moving and gripping. That means a lot to me too. Because, as I have mentioned here before - not only do I want to pour my heart onto my blog, I also want you The Readers to be entertained while reading what I've written.

Some of you even hinted at this being published. Those are big words, and I very much appreciate them - however, I would rather this thing stay hidden here on this blog where only my blog-friends will read it. If it were to be published, I don't think I'd be entirely comfortable with it.

I will probably post new installments on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. It all depends on how much time I have, and what my mood tells me to do. I scrapped the idea of having any form of deadline, as I thought it was in the best interest of the story that it be developed in its own time.

The next installment (can't leave you without an appetizer, can I?) will tell the story of when I met whom I've been referring to as My First Love. I think for story telling purposes I will give her an actual name in the story (though not her real name, of course).

Apart from this - everything will continue as usual here on Ramblings of a Madman - with a dark sense of humor and whatever else interesting I come up with to post.

Thank You all for tuning in!

WWC / Missed Photo Op

So it's time to play the WWC again. As you all know by know the soon-to-be-wed Tink of Pickled Beef is the missus who chooses a couple of words each week for us to interpret and take pictures of for this fun-filled event.

She chose a couple of interesting words for us this week, and they were STRANGE and BLACK.
I was just out walking with The One, and I saw the most amazing opportunity to shoot a picture that would have represented BLACK, but I didn't have the camera with me...

Out by the river, the ice and snow had started to melt away, and cracked open. It created a fantastic view of white ice and snow, very reminiscent of pictures and film I have seen from the Antarctic. In STRANGE patterns (I just now realized it could have represented that word too) BLACK water ran through it. When will I learn to ALWAYS take my camera with me. One never knows when the perfect photo op comes along.

Yes, I was out walking with The One again. It's the new thing apparently - to go out walking together. We'd been to the gym first, and she suggested we walk on Thursday. I couldn't then, I told her, and she suggested we go for a walk after gym. I can't help it... but I love this girl so much.

After posting the first installment of "Rubicon Heart" yesterday, I felt a rush of anxiety and fear overwhelm me. My insides were screaming at me "you revealed too much! People are going to think you are totally nuts now? They don't want to read that load of self absorbed pity".

Your comments since have told me otherwise. Thank You all for those kind words. It really makes me feel a lot more comfortable and confident of continuing the story for you. I will reflect more on this in a post tomorrow, once I let the whole experience settle in my mind...

On to the pictures you're all waiting for:

Trolls are pretty STRANGE don't you think?

**********

David Lynch makes wonderfully STRANGE movies

**********

A rather STRANGE BLACK warrior

**********

I drink my coffee BLACK

**********

Well... that does it for this week. We'll be back again playing next week. The words for next week will be SOFT and SQUARE.

PS. I'll be checking out all your pictures tomorrow... I'm all out of time today.

Rubicon Heart: Introduction

INTRODUCTION: “Alea iacta est...”

Ru•bi•con (rōō'bĭ-kŏn')
n. A limit that when passed or exceeded permits of no return and typically results in irrevocable commitment.

My heart is like that. I’ve come to realize this over the years. I may not pass that limit very often, but when I do there is no turning back. I become immersed with it, to the point where nothing else matters. I have a Rubicon Heart, and once I commit to loving someone, I have passed the point of no return. I am in it for the long haul.

The word derives from a river in northern Italy that Julius Caesar crossed with his army, in violation of the orders of the leaders in Rome, who feared his power. A civil war followed, in which Caesar emerged as ruler of Rome. Caesar is supposed to have said, “Alea iacta est” (The die is cast), as he crossed the river.

I crossed that river in 1990. I cast my dice, and came up empty handed. I have yet to get back to the other side of that river… the river which divides a happy place and a place of despair.

I committed my heart to fall in love again, two years ago. I picked up my dice and cast it again, for the second time in my life… and I’ve come up empty again. The gamble of love is not my game… in this I am a loser, and I’ve lost belief, hope and years of my life committing to this one bet I placed in 1990. My second bet is still on the table, but the cards I’ve been dealt are not looking good. I fear what will happen when I lay my cards out on the table. What do I have left to lose? How am I going to pay the price of losing yet again?

This is the story of how I got here. This is the story of my love life, or of my lack thereof. But, before we begin you need to understand a few things about me. You need to know where I come from, and what shaped me as an emotional human being.

Growing up was never easy. I didn’t suffer tremendously or anything – there are people out there with far worse fates than mine. I do not feel sorry for myself, nor do I want others to pity me for the things I went through growing up. What happened shaped me – made me the man I am today. Some of who I’ve become is good, while other things have seriously damaged my ability to live the life I wanted to live.

This story – the “Rubicon Heart” story – is not about my childhood, or about the abuse and alcoholism I witnessed, so I will not be going into great detail about these things. I will give you an overview, a quick and to-the-point look into this part of my life, as I believe it is imperative that you know these things in order to understand the workings of my heart. If I didn’t go through the things I am about to tell you about, I would not have had such a bleeding heart… and I would not have felt so lonely and insecure about myself.

My father was an alcoholic. He was never a physical drunk, and he never laid a hand on my mother. He never laid a hand on me. But, he drank much of his life away. He drove my mother away from him, because she could not live with him. He could never hold a job for a long time, and he couldn’t bring in the money to our house.

When I was six, my mother decided to divorce him. She was from Europe, and she took me and my sister and moved across the pond… miles and miles away from my father. A year later he came over to Europe, looking to get his life back together – but things didn’t work out that way, and he returned to the States after only a couple of weeks.

I didn’t hear from him in seven years after that. Neither did my mother. He had succumbed to heavy alcoholism, and was basically just pissing his life away at the time. I don’t know much about what he went through during these years.

What my mother didn’t know when she made the decision to move back to Europe was that she was headed for a far worse existence than what she had suffered through with my father.

My sister was 20 at the time, and my mother already knew that she was experimenting with drugs. As we came to Europe, she got her own place in another city… and she quickly became more and more dependent on the drugs. It wasn’t long before she was addicted to heroin, and her life became sinister and dark.

My mother sought comfort in a new man. He seemed like a nice enough guy, but he too had a drinking problem. And, unlike my father, he had a tendency for violence when he was drunk. His drinking habits were far worse than my father’s had ever been, and the days of sobriety were few and far between.

I was eight at the time, and my life consisted of going to school, coming home to a drunken mother and step-father, and wondering how my sister was doing. I still remember those days… not wanting to come home, because I didn’t know what I would be coming home to. But, having to come home, because maybe I was needed there to protect my mother from this man.

It was a good day when I came home to see my mother and her New Man sitting at the kitchen table with a bottle of cheap booze between them, and they were talking and laughing. But, every so often, that talking and laughing would become screaming and shouting before bed time arrived.

Of course, I didn’t want my friends coming over. Of course, I didn’t want to go out with my friends all of the time, because even though I was just a child, I knew I needed to be home to protect my mother. I was the one who had to call the police when he started slapping her around. I will never forget the time she came crawling on her hands and knees into my room, bleeding profusely from the back of her head after he had pushed her to the floor and she’d banged her head against the sharp corner of the kitchen table.

“Please… call the police”, she begged me. “He’s going to kill me”.

My mother was weak. She suffered from severe depression, and she could not take care of herself. She drank because she had to in order to survive the hellish environment that was home.

I never had the chance to be a “normal” kid in school. I never had confidence. What little money my step-father brought into the household was spent on booze. I never had nice clothes, and I never had the confidence to stand up to the kids who bullied and mocked me on account of my old rags – while they confidently sported designer clothing and looked fresh and rested. I didn’t have the strength to fight back, and I became an easy target for those kids’ evil deeds.

I committed whole heartedly to protecting my mother. It was the only thing I could do. My childhood blew by, and this is what I did. In the meantime, I sat in my room – mostly by myself – and I took up writing as an avenue of freedom. I needed this to find a place where I could escape reality – a place where I could block out the screaming and shouting that was overheard from the kitchen… God I hated the kitchen. My room was my safe haven. My type-writer was my communication device.

At the age of fourteen I lost my sister. She had tried so hard to become clean, and she even moved to the town we lived in, so that she could be close to her mother. As you can understand, my mother could not give her the support that my sister needed. The drunk she was with, would also constantly put down my sister – to him she was a fucking druggie, while he was only an alcoholic, which made him that much more worthy as a human being.

My sister and he once got into a big fight when she stayed at our place one night. I loved my sister, and she kicked his ass that time. She wasn’t going to take any abuse from him, and she wasn’t going to put up with him calling her names and degrade her for being a drug-addict. She was always a good and loving person, but she was trapped in the pits of darkness that Heroin is.

She married a man who was an addict since his thirteenth birthday. He too was the kindest and most caring man that I have ever met. When my sister OD’d in the train-station restrooms, and never woke up again, he vowed to take his own life and follow her to the other side. He called us two days after my sister died, having stolen enough frozen meat to last a year.

“Would you please buy it. It will be enough so I can get some heroin and booze, so I can overdose and disappear from this world. I have no reason to be here any more”.

My mother told him that we were here for him. He was part of our family, and we still love him like one of our own. We were not going to buy the meat from him – we were not going to help him commit suicide.

The next day, they found his body on the floor of their apartment. He had taken an overdose of Heroin. He is buried next to my sister in our family grave… he never had a family of his own, as he was thrown out on the streets by his mother at the age of thirteen.

It wasn’t until I was nineteen that I could stand up against the abuse my mother suffered through. A friend of mine was over at my place that day, and we plotted to rid ourselves of my step-father once and for all. It went down like this:

My mother deliberately got on his nerves, and pushed him into starting a fight with her. Me and my friend came into the kitchen and protected her as she was being hit by him. We kicked his butt good and hard – called the police and had them take him away. We got the keys to the apartment from him, and told him never to return.

That part had been done several times before. The taking of the keys and telling him he’s out for good. This time was the one time that stuck, and my mother found the strength to stand by that decision as well.

But, the damage was already done, of course. And even without him in the house, my mother slipped deeper and deeper into her own case of alcoholism. This I had no power to do anything about.

My father… my real life father had gotten his life together back in the States. He’d found a new woman whom he married, and she was very strict and demanded of him to quit drinking. For the most part that worked, and he was building up a good life for himself with her on his side. I am forever thankful for what she did for my father – whom I never stopped loving despite not having seen much of him.

They moved to Florida, and I wanted so badly to establish a relationship with him. I decided to take the big step and move out to Florida with him at the age of 20.

This didn’t work out so well for me. I felt terrible for having left my mother behind, knowing she was probably drinking more now that I was not there. I was everything she had left in her life, and she will never get over the loss of her first child – my sister. She will never forgive herself for not having done everything she could to protect her. I am sure, however, that my sister – just like I myself – always could feel our mother’s love.

It was also during this time that my own life went down the drain. It was here that my First True Love took that Rubicon Heart of mine and crushed it beyond repair.

This is who I am, and this is what shaped me as a human being. Things are much better these days. My mother kicked the bottle out of the house 12 years ago, and has not had a drink ever since. I can’t even begin to tell you what a wonderful feeling it is not to have to worry about her having drunk herself into oblivion, and maybe even to death.

It was Christmas 12 years ago when she hit rock bottom. She’s always loved Christmas time and spending time with the family. Many Christmases up to this one, she’d spent alone at home either hung over too bad to come with us, or being flat out drunk. Her mother (my grandmother) never drank in her life, and our family does not traditionally drink together. Our family gatherings are devoid of alcohol, and cursing on account of a religious background. My Grandmother often cried and prayed to God on behalf of my mother and my Uncle’s alcoholism. Still, she never knew just how bad it was for either one of them.

This one Christmas, my mother drank consistently for 2 weeks. The day before Christmas Eve she passed out on the bedroom floor, and I had to call her sister (my Aunt, of course). My mother was already a member of the AA at this time, and she had tried really hard to straighten herself out. My aunt and I called her sponsor at the AA, and then took her to the hospital where she was admitted to detox. She went kicking and screaming, promising us that she was going to quit – she just needed one more drink and that would be it. Just one more!

She never had that one more drink. Not to this day, and I’m so proud of her. I love her with that Rubicon Heart of mine, and she is the only one to have never broken it. She is the only one to have loved me back with everything that she has to offer, and for that I am grateful. I don’t know where I would have been today without her.

Maybe without her – that time when I contemplated suicide, I would have gone through with it.

So, with this background I have prepared you for that journey. The journey through my love life. I have cried a couple of tears writing this just now. I had promised myself I would be honest with this story, and that I would not shy away from parts that are painful. So again, I crossed the Rubicon and by writing this I have passed the point of no return, and I have committed myself irrevocably to taking this journey and sharing it with you.

Alea iacta est…

The dice is cast.
